Like a child on Christmas Eve

Just got home from Ciaciaro (report to follow). However, I am giddy as a schoolgirl right now and can barely sleep because less than 24 hours from now is my second league kickball game! Man I have really been bitten by the bug! Reports have it that there are many teammates missing so I am really going to have to give it my all. No chaffed ass from riding the pine this week! Currently we are 4-0...I intend to make it 6-0 tomorrow evening. I am contemplating not washing my jersey all season for good luck, what do you think?

What ever happened to Paul Pfeiffer?

In 1988, when The Wonder Years first aired, the world fell in love with little Paul Pfeiffer. Since the show's cancellation, there have been many rumors about the whereabouts of the actor who played Paul. Some speculated that he is Marilyn Manson, others believe he owns a goat farm in North Dakota. However, finally the rumors can be put to rest. It has been recently discovered that Paul is living in Royal Oak, Michigan; and is an avid Mountain Biker.

Lumberjack 100 Report

After arguably one of Dirt Dawg’s best 3-hour filibusters on school improvement for the 07/08 school year, I was off to the races. Stopping to pick up Angela and Scott Hes, we headed up to Manistee for a weekend of MTB fun.

Scott Hes had been put in charge of arranging the hotel accommodations. Let’s just say he really outdid himself this time putting us up in one of the finest five star cabins Northern Michigan had to offer. Angela was delighted!

Overall, the race went quite well. Since this race was a virgin attempt for me, I probably went out a little too conservative. I rode most of the first lap with the Dolpenator. Once again, Alex seemed to validate his G.P.S. title (this time: German Pacing System). After awhile Alex got sick of me talking mindless babble behind his wheel and took off. I continued to settle in at a comfortable pace.

In the end, I ended up coming in 25th, with a finishing time of 8hr25min, not too bad for a “roadie”. My goal for the race was to crack the top 15. I judged most of my race pace on times posted the past two years. Going by that, my time would of cracked the top ten both years. However, I think the cooperative weather, added field depth, and reversing the course direction added up to a faster race this year. I did have a great time and learned a few things as well for next year: 1. Set my bike up in a bit more relaxed position. 2. Don’t talk so much when on Alex’s wheel. 3. Get a FS bike! 4. Ride Faster. 5. Don’t let Scott Hes reserve the hotel!

The after party was a blast! Founder’s Brewery sponsored the race and provided bottomless cups of loud mouth soup, which I took full advantage of. Angela and Scott had to drag me out after we noticed we were the last people there.

W.C.I.F.A.:
My hats are off to Mike Simonsen for smoking the course in 7 hours flat and leading for the first 60 miles! In addition, huge props to Robert Herriman for virtually shaving 30 minutes off his time from last year.

Ode to Alice Cooper

One more day until freedom...nothing but waking up...drinking coffee...riding my bike...taking a nap...and riding my bike more.

Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin' all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya
Can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya
That's a drag

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Well we got no class
And we got no principles (principals)
We ain't got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes

School's out for summer
School's out forever
My school's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Out for summer
Out 'til fall
We might not come back at all

School's out forever
School's out for summer
School's out with fever
School's out completely

A Little Race Anxiety

T minus 3 more days to go until the Lumberjack 100. I’m starting to go into the “what the f—k have I got myself into” mode!

After the finish of Cedar Creek, I thought to myself… Next week I will have started two hours prior to the start of this race and will probably be racing for another two more after the end.

100 miles in the dirt is a long time.

A Day of Infamy

“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome”

-Arthur Ashe

This quote has become personally therapeutic for what happened at Cedar Creek today. I went into this race very hungry for a result. I was extremely attentive in all of the early developments and tried to make all the right moves to ensure that I put myself in any breakaway positions. Just after the second lap I got into a 5-man break. The majority of the teams were represented with the exception of Priority Health, South Lyon Cycles, and Essex Brass. We quickly put a sizable gap on the field and managed to hold them off for just around 62 miles only to be caught with just above 5k to go.

I could smell, taste, and feel a state title. Even as I write this, a million different scenarios are going through my head of how we could of lasted…what if we averaged .25mph faster?…what if we wouldn’t of got caught up in the confusion of a wrong turn on lap three?…what if we could of stayed out of sight for 1 more mile? However, ultimately I cannot hang my head low. I gave my best shot today and I rode the longest break I have ever been in. I threw all of my cards on the table and it just didn’t work out. Nonetheless, I feel the satisfaction of success in my journey.
